The origin of the street's name is said to date back to the 15th century Duke of Bretagne or Brittany who built a house in this location previously called Britaine or Bretagne Street. The area was known for booksellers and has had some important visitor and residents who lived in the area. Six buildings make up the estate within The Ward of Aldersgate many named after some of the famous people who lived or worked in the area:
